On Wednesday, February, 20, 2008, DJs Mathematix and L.A. Kendall started off the night with bumpin’ beats at Fremont’s Nectar. The two DJs switched off through out the evening playing a mix of genres including hip-hop to old school goodies - one of which I distinctly remember to be Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing.” Thank you, DJ Mathematix, again for playing some Daft Punk, because amazingly enough I’ve never heard them in a club type setting that wasn’t Kanye West’s “Stronger”!
San Francisco’s hey willpower took the stage with Will Schwartz (also from Imperial Teen) belting out lyrics with Tomo Yasuda backing Schwartz with his electronic sounds and mixes. I swear I heard a cover of Architecture in Helsinki’s “Heart It Races,” but either way I loved their set. Schwartz’ energy blew me away and was fun to watch him dance and jump around all the while with a old school looking sweater with a HUGE kitty head on it!
Closing off the night was a DJ set by the New York duo, MEN, which includes two members of Le Tigre, Johanna Fateman and JD Samson. They brilliantly ended the night with their nonstop dance tunes. There were no fancy or flashy outfits or dance routines - just a strobe light, their equipment, and their talent was all that was needed to keep the dance party going late into the night. So don’t come expecting a Le Tigre-esque show ’cause “MEN are DJs.”
