Sound has discovered a liquor license application filed Thursday, July 31 with the Washington State Liquor Control Board for the property at 2200 2nd Ave. For those without total recall, that is the currently empty space that, until last December, was the Crocodile Cafe, the stories music venue that staged some of Seattle’s greatest live shows of the ’90s and early ’00s. The liquor license has been filed by Marcus and Sheila Charles. Marcus is a local nightlife impresario who has previously owned Marcus’ Martini Heaven and once had a stake in Neumos. He currently owns Bad Juju Lounge, located a few doors down from the shell of the Crocodile at 2224 2nd Ave. Sheila is his wife.
Whether or not this means that Marcus and Sheila have, in fact, purchased the club, remains to be seen. Earlier this year a company called Groupee Venues also applied for a liquor license for the space, but soon after withdrew it’s application. The circumstances surrounding the application withdrawal are not yet known, though one can infer from Charles application that Groupee Venues is no longer in the picture.
One interesting item on the current application is the choice for the businesses name: Crocodile Cafe. This doesn’t guarantee that the prospective new owners will retain the club’s old identity, but it’s a good sign.
Marcus Charles did not immediately return a request for comment.
See the application for yourself here and click on “King County.”
No word yet on the couple’s view regarding elitism.
