If you’ve haven’t heard Brooklyn-via-Miami producer Michna’s debut effort, Magic Monday, do yourself a favor and change that. Over the course of its 12 tracks, it covers a decades worth of influences from original Miami electro, (we’re talking electro before Ed Banger took a hack at at it, and even before early electro-clash brought a rock guitar sound into the equation), booty rap, jungle, and a host of others that Michna fed upon as he was coming up in the New York and Miami scenes as DJ Egg Foo Young. With this depth of music knowledge at its foundation, Magic Monday is a fine construction made up of funky hip-hop, downtempo, and a touch of understated pop-hookery.
With this laundry list of musical genres touched upon, it’s difficult for me to imagine who wouldn’t find Magic Monday appealing, but, if an hour’s worth of instrumentals isn’t your thing, allow me to suggest a recent mix Michna has compiled for self-titledmag.com. Along with the head of Michna’s label, Ghostly International’s Sam Valenti IV, (Seattle’s The Sight Below also calls Ghostly home), the two producers take us through the work of artists that have guided both Michna and the influential label at large. It takes us from an ambient-house classic, Orbital’s ‘Halcyon & On & On’ all the way through to The Cure. You can find it at self-titledmag.com.
Tonight Michna will present Magic Monday with his live band, Raw Paw. Also playing is another excellent NY producer/DJ, Eliot Lipp, and the fabulous local Fourth City talent of Linda & Ron’s Dad and the Trashy Trash DJs. Doors at Chop Suey open at 9 PM.
